I Can Do Hard Things

I don’t count myself as a naturally lucky person.
I don’t win drawings or prizes.
Things just don’t ‘happen’ to me to benefit my life.
I’m not chosen first.
I have to work for everything that I have and am.
But with this I feel I have gained more for working for something than if it were just handed to me.

Growing up, my Mother always taught me that I could have or be anything in the world I wanted if I worked hard for it. I apply this to every aspect in my life, whether temporal, mental, physical, or spiritual. And the world ALWAYS makes me work hard for it. Even just a simple task of getting a drivers license. When it would normally take the average person two to theee weeks to deal with and finish this task. In my world, it takes twice as long. It can be very frustrating. I try not to let the frustration overwhelm me (sometimes I’m not so good at it), because in the end I will reach my goal.

I had the opportunity recently to attend freshman orientation to start University. Now I’m as non traditional student as you get. I’m in my late 30s, divorced, no children, low income, very white female, with fairly good grades from high school 20 yrs ago. This posses every kind of issue: there are not many scholarships or financial aid, I’m smart but not quite smart enough to get direct admit into the program of my choice, and I have better time management and work ethic than my 18 yr old peers. I want this education. I have put this off for 20 yrs due to circumstance after circumstance. I’m willing to do just about anything to get this education. And I didn’t make it easy on myself to pick a top ten university to start off my education with nonresident tuition. The path has not been easy and I have thought about quitting on multiple occasions, but I persist. I trudge through the piles of obstacles in my way and break through. Sometime I am faced with more obstacles, sometimes I get a short reprieve. But I know that the path has been laid for me by God. I know, through prayers and fasting and researching and tears that this is the path I’m supposed to walk. And to know it will never be easy.

It will be worth it!

  1. You are an inspiration! Keep pressing forward, the journey is rocky but it will be worth it. I graduated at 54 years old, you've got a head start. Life circumstances build who we are and who Heavenly Father intended us to be. Let Him lead your path and you will be amazed at where the journey takes you. I love you dear Sister
